Flew to Phnom Penh, Cambodia this morning to personally offer condolences on the passing of His Majesty King-Father Norodom Sihanouk. His Majesty worked tirelessly for Cambodia and was revered by his people. When Singapore became independent in 1965, Cambodia under then Prime Minister Sihanouk was one of the first countries to recognise our new Republic.
I first met His Majesty in 1967, when Mr Lee Kuan Yew visited Cambodia and brought the family along. I remember him taking us around Phnom Penh in an open-topped car, and proudly showing us the facilities he was building such as the sports stadium.
He will be missed by all Cambodians and by many in Singapore. – LHL
